End of Baskebtall Season....

I debated on taking a personal day off from work today due to the little bit of depression facing the final game day for “Blue Thunder” was this past Saturday but I suppose life must go on J  My kids and the parents of my team surprised me with a 50/50 fundraiser on Saturday to help me raise money for the marathon!  The lady who won the 50/50 ended up donating the money back which totaled a donation of $127…so thank you!!!  It really meant a lot and I’m sorry if I seemed confused, I was truly surprised!  It was so thoughtful!  (Fundraising total now is at $627)

The weekend update:
Friday we had our final “Blue Thunder” practice and reviewed our new play to confuse the other team with “Chicken” since they had seemed to catch onto it…so we changed it a little bit and named it “Horse” so they wouldn’t know who the play was for.  We practiced “Mud Pitt” a little bit more to make sure we could still try to pull it off as well.  I’m really surprised how well the kids remembered the different plays we tried and how they each looked out for each other to try and help one another in scoring.  After practice we had a cookout at one of the parent’s house filled with hot dogs, hamburgers, s’mores, and a very well decorated Blue Thunder cookie that was almost too good to be true!
Saturday arrived and our basketball game went great!  A lot of the kids really did good things, passed well; shot well, different players were more involved.  The big highlight of the day was one of our final 2 players who hadn’t scored yet SCORED with our secret play called “horse”….as soon as she scored the other team in a confused manner said I thought she played “chicken”…so it seems our idea worked out perfectly J  The whole gym was excited at the big basket too!  Our other player, who didn’t actually score in a game, has done so well too!  He scored in warm ups while shooting the ball the right way (not granny shooting as we claimed)…he’s learned to catch and dribble and makes me laugh everyday!  I’m so proud of the improvements that EACH one of these kids has made and I hope they got as much out of all this as I have.  We are having an end of the season Cupcake Party on Wednesday where the kids can decorate their own cupcakes and have all the sugar they want J  I assume that’s what good coaches do…reward them with lots of sugar and send them home with their parents…right?
I had a little bit of a shorter run on Saturday before attending a little birthday party for a close friends little boy.  I really do think some of this training and blogging has been therapeutic with some of this so I appreciate you all staying tuned in.
Sunday we went for a little drive, and I wanted to see just how far some of the routes I’d been running were.  Long story short, they weren’t as far as I thought, so that was a little bit depressing and a sure sign I wasn’t as in shape as I’d wished or at least my intuition of distance isn’t as good as it once was.  Nevertheless, just add a little bit more here and there on the runs and at least I know for now.  The weather was gorgeous, so with my new found knowledge of distance I added a good bit to this run to make it a longer day since it was nice and I had the time to do so.  I did cheat a tiny bit and promised myself if I ran this other addition first I would allow myself to walk halfway up the hill.  (I’m sorry but that hill is not a sore knee’s best friend at this moment)
Since the “end of the season” usually calls for “Senior Nights I’ll touch on that memory with dad.  See, in high school our girls basketball team’s regular senior night got cancelled due to something with Wirt County not having enough players for a game or something (memory is failing, sorry).  We ended up having the girl’s senior night during halftime of a boy’s game.  (And boy did we get spoiled) Dad was really upset about Wirt County cancelling when it happened and I actually never knew until after the season the real reason why.  I never realized just how close I was at that time to scoring 2000 points in high school.  It just wasn’t part of my thinking process I suppose.  Even when I scored my 1000th point my sophomore year I was about to get upset at the referee Paul Sparks (we still joke about it) because I thought he was going to call me for a walk on my layup.  They kept blowing their whistle to pause the game and I think I even asked Paul what I did wrong while following him around and I probably looked like an idiot walking around in circles about what happened until they announced it.
I suppose at this point in the season, dad knew with our regional’s being against Bridgeport and the tough game it would be, it might have been our last so every game may have been cutting it close so the game against Wirt was important in the chance at that.  Even at the state tournament against Braxton when our student section had a countdown going, I didn’t even realize exactly what was going on.  Dad and I had an agreement, things like that situation with points as well as when college coaches would be at the game, I didn’t want to know about it, we just had an understanding with my nerves and how I analyze everything it was better I just didn’t know (that was my request to him).  I look back and realize just how much dad actually protected me from my own self and weird ways…..given a situation like that I suppose only a dad would understand that, that’s when I’m thankful he was my coach too.

Dad and I (yes I have a black eye) :)
