"Dollars for Dad"-- Help us Inspire the Nation for Team Spangler

I have LOTS of Catching up to do J

I think I left you off on Monday’s update from the weekend and somehow Thursday has already snuck up on me.
On Monday my Project for the day was to open up a Bank Account to keep everything flowing into so when I have events I can deposit it there and write the money out of it to send off to Team Fox as we continue to get a little bit more established.  I have decided to name myself as “Team Spangler” since I may be the one running the actual race, but we all will be doing it as a team to honor dad/coach/teacher/mentor/friend/someone who knew him..whatever he was to each of you.  I have yet to get time to get to “On the Run” in Parkersburg where a fellow running supporter in the area owns the store to get my new pair of running shoes so I need to find a day I can jet down during normal store times.   I had to attend a work event that the Governor was attending in the evening so running wasn’t for a very long time that evening.  (I didn’t think I could ask the Governor to go for a run with me, or if his schedule would permit)
On Tuesday, it was a BEAUTIFUL day so I took for a run on trails on the farm behind our house.  It is so peaceful back through there and I think I could run for days….but for this particular run it was only for around 45 minutes.  I hate to admit but I’ve yet to run with a runners watch because I’m trying to get a “base” of mileage going before I start to really keep on top of things.  Since I had taken a good bit of time off from running, I’m trying to avoid the knowledge of frustration in comparison to what I use to be able to do at one point in time, before I consume myself with specifics of times and distances.  But…I’m getting there J  The anxiety of speed when knowing the watch is clicking on your wrist tends to get a little overworked prior to being ready to speed it up.
Last night was our Blue Thunder Cupcake Party at The Tasty Cupcakery here in Ripley (they got to decorate their own 2 cupcakes and of course eat them) J…and they certainly lived up to their “Wild Wednesday” reputation with the assistance of what seemed like an endless supply of icing.  They all seemed to enjoy it and I was a little sad to think about not having practices and games anymore.  I had gotten a little “action” shot of them all printed out and put in a little frame for them to be able to keep.  I thought if they put it up in their room it will be a little reminder to work at something or just enjoy basketball.  I wrote each of them a little note as well so they will know how much I enjoyed the team.  I’m certain none of them know how much I talk about them on here J  I suppose all coaches go through this transition until it’s time to recompose and think about next season.  No wander dad coached an assortment of sports.
On a training update…I got a short run in again followed by what will probably be the start of a routine involving a bag of ice J  See…I have several trainers who can attest to me not being the most flexible athlete they’ve ever come across (depending on who you ask, I’m probably the MOST unflexible) so until I get everything use to be being in use….it’s nothing a little ice can’t numb up J

As a fundraising update…I did get a P.O. Box address to be able to “Blast” out to the social media world and other routes of marketing to work on a few little projects we hope to pursue.  I could REALLY use everyone’s help when I get all the wording correct to blast a hopeful outreach event focusing on just $1.  The general idea is going to be…”Dollars for Dad’----  Help us Inspire the Nation for Team Spangler  All I’m asking for is $1 to be sent to the PO box address….  I have a large map I got of the US….and there are so many of us dad has inspired that have moved out of state etc, and everyone knows someone who may know dad’s story…and we want to spread that inspiration across the nation for dad.  I am going to keep track of where the donations come from and mark them on the map (see how much we can accomplish $1 at a time).  When I go to visit dad I plan on taking the map and continuing to show him just where his story has reached and continue to reach up until the race in November….I would LOVE to get at least one donation from every state so that we “cover the nation”.  The PO Box Address for “Team Spangler” or you can address my name as well “Missy Spangler” (I have it registered as both) is:

Team Spangler and/or Missy Spangler
P.O. Box 403
Ripley, WV 25271

I’m looking forward to stopping on my way home everyday to see who he’s inspired that day and think about while running J   I have a close friend working on a little flyer as well to be generated via Facebook, twitter, email, and whatever avenue we can.  I have created a twitter account thanks to Tara coaxing me into it, and I’ve been obsessed with the opportunities it can bring.  My twitter name is MissySpangler22 if anyone wants to follow J
I suppose a Basketball Party completes the Basketball season…so maybe tomorrow the focus will be on dad’s next sport he was involved in….baseball/tee-ball/softball/track?....   We are use to seasons overlapping in our household.

I leave you today with this quote….(if you keep following the blog you’ve learned dad loves his inspirational quotes and this one is only fitting for the upcoming track/running season)

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift"--Steve Prefontaine

We will give our best…..and prove to the nation dad just how much you’ve taught and inspired us all.

End of Baskebtall Season....

I debated on taking a personal day off from work today due to the little bit of depression facing the final game day for “Blue Thunder” was this past Saturday but I suppose life must go on J  My kids and the parents of my team surprised me with a 50/50 fundraiser on Saturday to help me raise money for the marathon!  The lady who won the 50/50 ended up donating the money back which totaled a donation of $127…so thank you!!!  It really meant a lot and I’m sorry if I seemed confused, I was truly surprised!  It was so thoughtful!  (Fundraising total now is at $627)

The weekend update:
Friday we had our final “Blue Thunder” practice and reviewed our new play to confuse the other team with “Chicken” since they had seemed to catch onto it…so we changed it a little bit and named it “Horse” so they wouldn’t know who the play was for.  We practiced “Mud Pitt” a little bit more to make sure we could still try to pull it off as well.  I’m really surprised how well the kids remembered the different plays we tried and how they each looked out for each other to try and help one another in scoring.  After practice we had a cookout at one of the parent’s house filled with hot dogs, hamburgers, s’mores, and a very well decorated Blue Thunder cookie that was almost too good to be true!
Saturday arrived and our basketball game went great!  A lot of the kids really did good things, passed well; shot well, different players were more involved.  The big highlight of the day was one of our final 2 players who hadn’t scored yet SCORED with our secret play called “horse”….as soon as she scored the other team in a confused manner said I thought she played “chicken”…so it seems our idea worked out perfectly J  The whole gym was excited at the big basket too!  Our other player, who didn’t actually score in a game, has done so well too!  He scored in warm ups while shooting the ball the right way (not granny shooting as we claimed)…he’s learned to catch and dribble and makes me laugh everyday!  I’m so proud of the improvements that EACH one of these kids has made and I hope they got as much out of all this as I have.  We are having an end of the season Cupcake Party on Wednesday where the kids can decorate their own cupcakes and have all the sugar they want J  I assume that’s what good coaches do…reward them with lots of sugar and send them home with their parents…right?
I had a little bit of a shorter run on Saturday before attending a little birthday party for a close friends little boy.  I really do think some of this training and blogging has been therapeutic with some of this so I appreciate you all staying tuned in.
Sunday we went for a little drive, and I wanted to see just how far some of the routes I’d been running were.  Long story short, they weren’t as far as I thought, so that was a little bit depressing and a sure sign I wasn’t as in shape as I’d wished or at least my intuition of distance isn’t as good as it once was.  Nevertheless, just add a little bit more here and there on the runs and at least I know for now.  The weather was gorgeous, so with my new found knowledge of distance I added a good bit to this run to make it a longer day since it was nice and I had the time to do so.  I did cheat a tiny bit and promised myself if I ran this other addition first I would allow myself to walk halfway up the hill.  (I’m sorry but that hill is not a sore knee’s best friend at this moment)
Since the “end of the season” usually calls for “Senior Nights I’ll touch on that memory with dad.  See, in high school our girls basketball team’s regular senior night got cancelled due to something with Wirt County not having enough players for a game or something (memory is failing, sorry).  We ended up having the girl’s senior night during halftime of a boy’s game.  (And boy did we get spoiled) Dad was really upset about Wirt County cancelling when it happened and I actually never knew until after the season the real reason why.  I never realized just how close I was at that time to scoring 2000 points in high school.  It just wasn’t part of my thinking process I suppose.  Even when I scored my 1000th point my sophomore year I was about to get upset at the referee Paul Sparks (we still joke about it) because I thought he was going to call me for a walk on my layup.  They kept blowing their whistle to pause the game and I think I even asked Paul what I did wrong while following him around and I probably looked like an idiot walking around in circles about what happened until they announced it.
I suppose at this point in the season, dad knew with our regional’s being against Bridgeport and the tough game it would be, it might have been our last so every game may have been cutting it close so the game against Wirt was important in the chance at that.  Even at the state tournament against Braxton when our student section had a countdown going, I didn’t even realize exactly what was going on.  Dad and I had an agreement, things like that situation with points as well as when college coaches would be at the game, I didn’t want to know about it, we just had an understanding with my nerves and how I analyze everything it was better I just didn’t know (that was my request to him).  I look back and realize just how much dad actually protected me from my own self and weird ways…..given a situation like that I suppose only a dad would understand that, that’s when I’m thankful he was my coach too.
